Daily Inspiration: Meet Mekeita Freeman and Ashley-Shawn Bygrave

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekeita Freeman and Ashley-Shawn Bygrave.

Hi Mekeita and Ashley-Shawn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Savor the Board is a small, female-owned black business. We handcraft thoroughly curated artisanal charcuterie boards and grazing tables that showcase gourmet cheese, premium meats, fresh fruit and veggies, along with the perfect pairing of accoutrements and crackers. Our journey begins as sisters transitioning to motherhood and evolving inevitably into co-owners. Neither of us wanted to continue conforming to corporate views, so starting STB was our way of escaping the mundane office environment that was not for us. We’ve been creating boards since we could tell the difference between Merlot and Pinot Noir and decided to take the leap and turn it into more than a pass time. This business gives us the opportunity to share what we love not only with each other but Houston and surrounding areas.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So far, it’s been a pretty smooth journey for us, and we are beyond grateful. We both started this experience pregnant. We agree that being able to go through both experiences together has not only brought us closer but has shown us how multi-faceted and strong we are with how much we manage to juggle in our personal lives and our business.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We think our passion shows through our work, especially in the presentation. There’s plenty of research that goes into our process. We strive for the best quality products and are constantly brainstorming ways to offer new and exotic additions to our boards. We knew what we liked and didn’t like as consumers, and that plays a large part when we’re creating boards. We are constantly trying to innovate and offer a variety of sizes and affordable prices to our clients. Savor the Board is still relatively new, and our following is broadening. We look forward to gaining more support as well as clients who feel the love that goes into each board. Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Our support system includes our other sisters, our mom, significant others, our sons and close friends who reinforce our ambitious dreams. They are truly the best cheerleaders. They help us stay motivated and focused when dealing with any opposition in such a saturated market.

  • Petite board: $15 feeds 1 person (minimum purchase of 10)
  • XSmall board: $55 feeds 1-2 people
  • Small board: $85 feeds 2-4 people
  • Large board: $200 feeds 12-15 people
  • Grazing table: $200 per foot
