Meet Clio Lang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clio Lang.

Clio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Los Angeles, California born Imani Lang {Pronounced Eye-Mahn-ee}. At age 18 I started performing poetry at open mics by the given nick name “Clio” which in Greek mythology; “Kleio” is a goddess of poetry.

How I started modeling began with needing photography to promote my writing. Following the premise of this journey; my brain condition hydrocephalus caused me to have multiple brain surgeries. Modeling became empowering because I was raising money for research for a cure through the Hydrocephalus Association. Hydrocephalus is when the brain cannot drain cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) on its own so it requires a shunt (catheter insertion) from the brain to another region of the body. As part of the body-positive movement; I noticed that women that suffered from hydrocephalic-body-scars lacked representation. Networking at art shows, runway auditions and author conferences became platforms for spreading awareness. I got into hair-modeling because I could creatively re-invent myself after the brain surgeries;

I have been writing creatively since grade school; have won several competitions that led my poems to be published in multiple magazines like Aaduna (New York), Larcenist Magazine (Europe), and Miracle E-zine (Canada). In 2018, I joined the Houston Writers Guild as their Critique Group Director in which propelled me to meet amazing authors and activism figures.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been many obstacles but I seem to simply jump over them. I am determined to see where my talents will take me. Not only do I have hydro that has held me back several times because there isn`t a cure, I also have a small support system. I have to struggle to have a normal life daily due to chronic pain and a multitude of doctor/specialist appointments for care management.

Although I have many struggles; I do not like sympathy from anyone.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Another exciting fact is that I’m currently a published model in two other magazines such as : Slem Global and POPPN magazine. Some people refer to me as a “renaissance woman” because I am kind of a practitioner in a variety of artistic therapies such as visual arts, playing piano, literature arts etc. Then, I immerse into neuroscience and am working on becoming an advanced practice nurse. I am known to be a patient advocate and have over three years of psychiatric experience.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is when there would be pool parties at my grandfather`s house in L.A. My sister and I tried sugar cane from the backyard at one of them and it was, like, the best thing ever. Nothing else with sugar taste like what our grandfather grew.
