Meet Mark Kulisek of Coastal Custom Cutting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kulisek.

Mark, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was raised in Waller, TX with parents that instilled in me the importance of family, integrity and honesty. I grew up playing sports but most importantly I developed my love for fishing and hunting very early in my childhood. I have one daughter, Kinsley Grace who is 4 years old. She is pretty much the reason I strive to be the best person I can be every day.

My passion for welding started in high school where I became extremely hands-on in perfecting my craft; this is when I knew that I wanted to work in the industrial fabrication industry. My passion for welding took me down a path that landed me at Tulsa Welding School in Tulsa, Oklahoma where I received my degree and CWS (Certified Welding Supervisor) Certification.

Before being named President of Coastal Custom Cutting, I managed national sales training programs for Victor Technologies and then worked as a Welding Process Specialist with Airgas. These positions both provided me with several key components that led to me being named President of Coastal Custom Cutting in 2015. I have been running CCC for 2 years now and am dedicated to my employees and this company and fully invested in becoming the leader in our industry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any story, I too have had my share of struggles to get to this point in my life. I had my daughter at the age of 26 and while she is truly the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me I was extremely scared. When you’re young and only have to focus on yourself you don’t feel as much pressure, but when you’re responsible for another person, and especially a child, you begin to really examine your life, your goals and put pressure on yourself to be the best person you can possibly be.

Another struggle I’ve faced was becoming President of a company at age 28. When I became President in 2015, I had no idea what the roles of a business owner entailed, this type of responsibility was completely new to me, but I wanted it more than anything and I wanted our company to be the best in the industry. I had to quickly learn how to run a business, hire the right staff, manage employees and oversee every aspect all while figuring out ways to grow and lead our company towards success. Just like a father, being a President means other people depend on you, they rely on you and follow your leadership and with that comes pressure, but I also use that as a tool for motivation.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?
I love Houston for so many reasons…. The 110-degree scorching heat during the summertime, the cultural diversity but most of all the industry it supports. Being that Houston is the energy capital of America, it gives us an amazing opportunity for success in the business we are in. About 80% of our business is somehow related to the oil and gas industry. If I had to say the one thing that really grinds my gears about Houston I would probably say its Highway 290.
