Today we’d like to introduce you to Lacey Mitchell & Lindsay Fletcher.
Hi ladies, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Lindsay: We are two sisters who both moved to Texas a few months before the pandemic. Working in cochlear implants, I took a job promotion in the Houston area, moving my family of six over twenty hours away from the Indianapolis area. Knowing that this was a great opportunity to venture out of Indiana and try new things, Lacey decided to follow. Two short months later, the pandemic hit, putting us in lockdown and altering both of our plans for the year. We had always dreamed of starting a business and found ourselves gifted with the time to finally do it.
After several months of running through business ideas and possibilities, we landed on the idea of adding glitter to our drinks. Within 24 hours, we landed our first major opportunity and it was petal to the metal! Within one month, we launched Sugar Mama Shimmer, an edible glitter company. Growing up in a dance studio in the Midwest wearing all things that sparkled, we are not shocked that this is where we landed. It’s true what they say – you can never completely get rid of glitter. And for us, no truer words have ever been spoken!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Lindsay: It has been a wild ride! (In all the greatest ways). One of our first hurdles was just figuring out what we were doing. We quickly found ourselves in a whole new territory. With both of our backgrounds being in sales, we knew we had a lot to learn in the retail/e-commerce space and figuring out the logistics of operating an online business was tough. Our second hurdle was balancing our full-time jobs with our “side hustle.” It meant spending all of our lunch breaks, evenings and weekends focused on our business. After five months, Lacey was able to quit her job to work for Sugar Mama Shimmer full time. But the struggles did not stop just because we had the extra hours to put in. In fact, the struggles just got bigger and continue to get bigger. We find ourselves with new struggles every day, but in our opinion, it’s a great indicator of growth. So we will take it!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Lacey: One of my favorite quotes is “with great risk comes great reward.” And it’s true! I took a risk of getting out of my comfort zone in Indiana, where I owned a home, loved my job and was surrounded by all of my friends and family. Making the move to Texas was very stressful but I knew in my gut it was time to change it up. And then, I took an even bigger risk when I quit my corporate sales job to work Sugar Mama Shimmer full time. I knew that it was up to me to be able to pay my bills, grow the business and make this business venture a success. If it failed, it would be my responsibility. However, I also knew my work ethic and I knew my drive to make this a success. Thus far both of those things had served me well for other people, so why wouldn’t it serve me well for our business too? At the end of the day, I knew I could always move back to Indiana and I could always get another job. Failure suddenly didn’t seem so scary. I knew in my gut that we were on to something great and when your gut tells you something, you should always listen!
