Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Ola.
Hi Caleb, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to the United States at the age of five after losing my mother in a horrible car accident. She taught me everything I needed to know about music at an early age, giving me a creative way to make song out of any situation. It felt like a totally different experience for me, moving to another country seeing different cultures and people with experiences similar to mine but I appreciated every moment, never taking it for granted.
While attending Church in Houston Texas, I would sing with the choirs and perform solo music to the congregations but I have always had a deep attachment to Afro music given my background. I lost my older brother at the beginning of High school and stopped singing all together since he was my number 1 supporter for music after our mother passed away. I started singing again in college after realizing it was a positive way to expresses my emotions and stress about life. It just felt like something that was apart who I was. My friend had a studio in his apartment and ask if I wanted to practice my vocals on his microphone, and the rest was history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me. It is hard to have a dream when others don’t see your vision and with little support. But I stayed positive and motivated to the point that every lesson only created more passion for my music. I would say depending on others was my biggest struggle but after I overcame that there was nothing holding me back.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Afro-fusion artist, I sing music using afrobeats with an American influence vocally. I am known for my first single”Escape” which I dropped my junior year of college. The song was created as a way for me escape reality from the problems I was experiencing at the time. I did not really care what others thought about the music, I only wanted to show my skills. After I released the song, the reaction I received from my friends and family was much bigger than I ever imagined. What sets me apart from others is my sound, I believe I have a unique sound. There are so many artists out there infusing Afro music with other genres, but not many of them hold value.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Some of my qualities include immense work ethic, persistence, positive, and goal-driven no matter the obstacles that life throws.
