Today we’d like to introduce you to Keya Hornsby.
Hi Keya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always wanted a business of my own. I had a “passion for fashion” in so many words. But just as I was about to get everything started for a fashion boutique, I had a dream about making candles. I’ve never even thought of making candles and didn’t know where to begin. So I grabbed my laptop and Googled, how to make candles. And the 1st thing said was to buy a candle-making kit to see if you like making candles. So I did. Hit it out of the park on the first try. I’m a Certified Pharmacy Technician, and it was much like compounding medications for me, getting the correct calculations. I absolutely fell in love!!
Next was the name Virago Chic. Virago means a strong, brave, warlike woman. A woman who demonstrates exemplary and heroic qualities. Going through a lot over the years, I felt like this described me and other women and how we have to overcome our struggles. And yet we hold it together and are very “Chic” with it. Thus, Virago Chic Candle Company was born. With my loving husband Dewayne by my side, Virago Chic is taking off. Dewayne is the best and fastest wicker! He believes hold heartedly in Virago Chic Candle Company. I love him so much for all the support he gives. This is not only my candle company it’s ours. He gives 100% each and every time. Today, my husband and I are still home-based with a dream of having a full store soon in Katy, TX.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No, it’s not always easy. Mostly when it comes to funding. We currently fund the business on our own. We don’t want to make more debt with a huge loan. So either we budget for a huge purchase of supplies or do a pop-up to purchase supplies. But it is 100% funded by us.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I work for Texas Children’s Hospital as an Administrative Assistant/Pharmacy Technician. I’ve been there since 2001. I’m most proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in life and the loving husband and supportive family I have. What sets me apart from others is my passion. My endurance and the love for candle-making.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Join Facebook candlemakers pages. It helps when troubleshooting. I network by doing events around Houston, pop-ups, and word of mouth. Lots of IG and Facebook posts. Large events have worked well for me. I have even done small parties at people’s homes, been invited to set up to sell candles. Thank all of you for that! All my supportive friends.
I would like to thank my wonderful, loving husband Dewayne Hornsby for everything.
