Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Luna.
Hi Taylor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started when I was about 5-6 years old. My great grandmother would hand me tracing paper and I would spend all day tracing dinosaurs and marvel superheroes for fun. My mom would help me move from tracing paper to copy paper once I got a little bit older. She always helped me see that I had a talent and I was special. She supported me and loved everything I created; honestly, I owe her a lot. She was always there and I don’t know where I would be without her. I love you a bunch, mom! Fast forward to middle school, where I attended Johnston over in the Meyerland area. There, my art teacher, Mrs. Arsham helped me zone in on my art skills. Next thing I know, BAM! 8th-grade year and I had no idea where I wanted to go to Highschool. My first choice was Belair but my girlfriend and friends were talking about HSPVA as being one of their first choices. I never heard of it and at the time didn’t even care. I never thought I ever get in anyways. Well, I shouldn’t have doubted myself cause three pressure-filled auditions later, I ended up getting in. I never understood the impact this choice had on my life until now.
HSPVA taught me how go beyond what you see. That school taught you how to let your mind be free but most importantly, how to be yourself. HSPVA is such a wonderful place. No one there judges you or bullies you. Everyone loves and cares there. There isn’t anywhere else that is close to that vibe in the world! While I was there, my teachers Mrs. Aguirre, Mr. Waddell and Mr. Glover all gave me the support and out of the box thinking I needed to continue my life as an artist and grow as a human being. I really thank and appreciate them every day! As Highschool wizzes on by, I started to develop a mixed style of abstract and pop art. When senior year came around our teachers recommended us join scholarships for our art. Me being the way I am I thought it would be a waste of time and just not do it but one of my art teachers helped me join one of many and WHAM scholarship! I got the Scholastic silver key award. After that, I felt like nothing is really out of reach in life. I learned never to doubt yourself and just stay true to yourself no matter what anyone else says. It’s your world. Mold it to your liking. Fast forward to the present day and I attended Pancakes and Boose over in downtime Houston 2 weeks ago and man let me tell you, that was a movie, I swear! I did pretty good there met some people and now I’m just trying to keep the snowball effect going and just keep trying to get out there!! That show proved to me I had talent so I’m not going to waste it!!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to being who you are and how you grow is never easy. I look at my art as a part of me and when you go out there and give it your all there are going to be people who have mixed feelings about it. Yes, it’s hard but it’s motivating don’t let other people get you down. Most of the bumps in the road I face is from my own doing. I doubt myself and always feel as if I’m never good enough to be doing what I’m doing, but when I take that leap of faith and give it my all, I always end up surprising myself every time. “ you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” – Wayne Gretzky
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My artworks all have this thing in common and it’s I don’t plan anything! Yes you’re supposed to plan your artwork but I feel like it hinders your creativity, what your really feeling on the inside in that very moment. I love just pulling a canvas out and just going at it! I love getting colors that contrast each other like the yellows and purples. A lot of what I do is based off of what I saw on my shrooms and other trips that I’ve had in the past. A lot of the artwork I make brings out my clarity in what I’m feeling in life in that moment, helps me understand what I’m going through better. Im proud of myself with coming this far with my art and just life in general. Life can be very hard sometimes, but you gotta keep going for yourself and cherish every little achievement you make every day. It’s important! There isn’t much that sets me apart from anyone, I’m just a guy with a rabbit and axolotl that loves some colors!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel like the characteristic that leads to my success is my positivity for sure. I try really hard to be as positive as I can every day and to make sure to spread it to everyone around me as well! If we all could just try and look on the brighter side of things and not take the things we have for granted, everyone would be happier, I promise it. That positive side of thinking leads to the productive attitude, which then leads to productive activities on my mama!
