Life & Work with Marissa Anukwuem

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Anukwuem.

Marissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Marissa Anukwuem, and I am the owner of Seven Twelve. I graduated from Sam Houston State University, and shortly after graduating college, I gave birth to my daughter on July 12, 2017. My daughter was born on 7/12 & weighed 7 pounds and 12 ounces, and that’s where I got the inspiration for the name of my business. At the time, I was a stay-at-home mom, but I have a love for fashion and the hustle. I started off with 3D minks lashes and shortly after, my business grew to head wraps and accessories. I am Nigerian American and I have a deep love for the culture, so I used that as my driving force. My business has allowed me to meet many people from all around the world at pop-up shops and networking events. You can purchase everything on my website www.ShopSevenTwelve.com.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Seven Twelve has been an amazing journey so far, but it’s definitely not easy. One of my main struggles is consistency because I’m currently running the business by myself, so everything is left up to me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is a lot like my personality because you can not box me in. I love all things beauty, and my goal is to continue to grow and add many different products to my brand. For instance, when you walk in a beauty supply store, you get a wide variety of beauty products, and that’s the feeling I want my customers to have. I’m proud of my brand as a whole. I believe that I have good quality products! My head wraps/velvet turbans are my favorite because they connect everyone back to our culture! My Ankara print items set me apart.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for networking is being confident, kind, and authentic. I’ve realized at networking events, most of my conversations start with a smile and giving someone else a compliment. Being personable has truly helped me with my sales. With finding a mentor, pray and ask God to lead you to someone that is willing and worthy of guiding you. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for advice from others that are doing well within their businesses.
