Exploring Life & Business with Mary Margaret Brollier and Kelly Hughes of Scribbled Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Margaret Brollier and Kelly Hughes.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We have been friends for about ten years! We met through Mary Margaret’s cousin and clicked right away! Aside from having playdates with our kids, we loved swapping stories about our teaching days and bouncing ideas off of each other. During the pandemic, we got together to have a playdate and started talking about ways we could help overwhelmed parents engage their kiddos at home. It hit us that a personalized touch would certainly engage kids! What kid wouldn’t love seeing their favorite princess, superhero, sport, or even video game on educational items!?

Shortly after that, Kelly got started on designing our first product- our Handwriting Binder with personalized covers. Each page in the binder was created by us and put in page protectors for dry-erase marker use. Kiddos loved it! We were shocked at how quickly these binders sold. We then went on to make other educational items like personalized sight word packs and activity placemats. After a while, Kelly’s designs really took off and we decided to make personalized things for the whole family! We now sell stationery, invitations, notepads, and gift tags. While we always cherish our educational roots, we have really loved getting into fun designs for families for the holidays, birthdays, and year-round. From custom design to packing, shipping, keeping up with social media and our Etsy shop, we have truly learned more over the past year than we have in our whole lives. We are humbled by the positive feedback from our customers and proud of our business. We are excited to see what the future holds for Scribbled Designs!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning the ins and outs of owning a business has been a challenge for us- luckily, we have our husbands doing a lot of the behind the scenes leg work on that. The main challenge for us is managing our time! We each have two small kids at home and work other part-time jobs in education! Balancing it all is hard. Growing a small business is constant!!! If you want it to grow, you have to hustle!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our personalization really helps us stand out among other educational tools because kiddos love seeing their custom items! We take into consideration favorite things, characters, colors, sports, etc. We now offer stationery, invitations, gift tags, notepads, and more. We are a one-stop shop for personalized paper goods! What sets us apart is our customization and relationships with our customers. We really love engaging with people and creating items they will love! We will go out of our way to make everyone happy with their order, and we have a quick turnaround- especially if you are in the Houston area! Our porch pick-up option is free (Apply code Houston in the Etsy shop at checkout to avoid shipping fees) and typically, Houston friends can have their Scribbled items within a week!

We are most proud of how hard we work to keep everyone happy and returning! We are diligent about our orders and replying to customers on Etsy and Instagram. You will always hear back from us pretty fast! It really helps that there are two of us to stay on top of the communication. There is a lot of it- especially around the holidays.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Kelly loved building giant sea creatures in the sand on beach family vacations. Mary Margaret loved her days at Camp Mystic during the summertime.
