Hidden Gems: Meet Dameon Davis a.k.a DJ Influenz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dameon Davis.

Hi Dameon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Music has always been a part of my life. I can vividly remember the classic funk, rock and hip-hop albums my dad would play on the record player, which contributed to me falling in love with music at a early age. He’d play the drums in our garage and I would join in. I was drawn to beats, tunes and sounds even more once I heard the infamous “Jam On It” by Nucleus.

When I was twelve, I would act sick to stay home and attempt to mimic the mixing and beat juggling on my stepfather’s dj setup, While in high school I would create playlists for all my family and friend’s parties, I felt the need to make the mix tell a story with the order and selection of songs. I controlled the flow of the party with my mix.

This is the same way I approach all of my bookings today. Starting out I was so nervous because opposed to a playlist I was now mixing music as I read the crowd. I’ve gained knowledge along the way from many other DJ’s who shared with me secrets of the craft to enhance my skills. I can say it’s truly an honor to spin for crowds making people smile and dance while bringing back memories from just a single song! My reason for being a DJ is all about having a good time and giving others an experience to last a lifetime.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has definitely been a struggle considering when I started out with a very limited amount of equipment. It was definitely not the sound nor look I envisioned when I decided to be a legit DJ. I started out with very small house parties; what some would call a “kickback” however, the crowd was always moving nonstop and enjoying themselves.

My name started to get passed around and I began to get more bookings then Covid-19 hit and put a halt on everything. I was so discouraged about the cancelations because I love to spin in front of a live audience. I began to do live shows on Instagram and Facebook to sharpen my skills as well as a couple of battles but, it never felt the same without actually seeing the people enjoying themselves. I was blessed to do Zoom parties which took off well for me and allowed me to upgrade my equipment during a pandemic.

Once the city opened back up, I was heavily requested by people I have never met before but they heard about my style and I was definitely ready to rock the house!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I fell in love with DJing at 12 years of age so my music knowledge is pretty wide considering I grew up around a musician and we loved all genres of music. I specialize in taking the crowd down memory lane and helping them party and remember the good times they’ve had as they relive those moments to my mixes. I’d say I’m mostly proud of me living up to my name and staying true to who I am and my style. I never feel like I know everything and I will always be a student of my craft which I feel will set me apart from others as well. My DJ name (DJ Influenz) was chosen because I influence the party.

My slogan is “I’m a bad influence but we’re going to have fun”. This is something I pride myself on as well as my professionalism and my attention to detail. I take pride in my presentation and I cater to my clients needs at all times. This year I’ve done five weddings and I delivered promptness, a clean set up and I also educate my clients on my work. I’m the DJ that will come to the walk through and walk side by side with your wedding planner to make sure I don’t miss anything for the special occasion and I do the same for all events that I have and will have in the future. I specialize in dealing with people and being accessible and approachable.

Many DJ’s turn people away that ask for requests but I refuse to be that guy because that one song may be just the thing someone needs. Knowing that we all have no idea what each other is dealing with inside makes me push harder to please the people. I’d like people to know when they book me they will get a professional man that prides himself on being early, neat, and understanding and reasonable. I offer mobile karaoke, weddings, birthdays, private events, corporate events, house parties, family reunions, and good old fashion backyard parties as well. I really love what I do.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel that luck has played a great deal in my success as well as preparation has. I have been lucky to become friends with DJ’s that have been spinning before I was able to walk and to have them give me so much knowledge and secrets is definitely rare. I’ve prepared myself for this moment and I believe my continuous hunger to learn and educate myself and my relentless hours of practice day in and day out has prepared me to be someone the city of Houston and surrounding states will definitely know!
