Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Nelson.
Hi Eric, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
While in Corporate America, I was a route auditor in Houston TX for a logistics company. I would drive through Houston neighborhoods all day and look at all the different aspects of homes. Over time, I realized the passion I had for the beauty of homes. As my corporate career progressed, I realized the limitations of being an employee-no matter how high up one became. In discussion with my wife, shortly after our first child was born, we both decided to become licensed. Initially, it was to assist in becoming investors.
We had completed a couple of projects and purchased a number of personal properties, and knew the industry was underserved. After completing a project inside the loop, we enjoyed all the work of preparing a listing for top of the market and negotiating all the terms in detail. When that property sold, we ended up making the decision to hold off on becoming the next Chip and Joanna Gaines and focus on building a real estate career that could serve and add value to families. We have had the honor of serving hundreds of families, are truly full time real estate agents and work to educate all of our clients in the process. I never want a client to say they just had a door opened and signed a bunch of papers, but want them to know about the process and journey of selling or buying a home.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The only smooth road would be if the car had flat tires and pot holes larger than craters on the moon! It has been a very fun and exciting journey, and we would not have changed anything along the way. I have the pleasure of being selected as the realtor for the respective clients, and it is not taken lightly. The largest struggle we had was finding the way to set myself apart from the competition, while truly adding value during the process.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Bayou City Team?
I am the team lead of The Bayou City Team, a full service real estate team based in Houston Texas. We service the entire Houston area and all markets. We are always a resource for before, during and after a sale or purchase of a property. I am University of Houston alum and take pride in calling Houston home and helping to make a real estate purchase enjoyable and fun.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When networking, it is never about what that person can do for me. It is what can I do for that person and how can I assist in elevating that person’s vision. Sometimes it is a referral or a phone call, others it is a business that can be supported and has a need that I need filled. As a realtor, I get calls often from vendors wanting to solicit me to use them and refer them. They typically have the same elevator pitch of why they are better than the others and make it seem it is an honor they would reach out to me. I try to operate in the opposite mindset, it is an honor for me to have the opportunity to network with that person. I want to stand apart from everybody else, not blend in. A call for coffee does not do much other than take 30 minutes from a busy day, unless you are making an impact in that 30-minute coffee meeting.
