Inspiring Conversations with Julia Proctor of Wild Wine Saloon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Proctor.

Hi Julia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey to natural wine started with food. Over the last ten years I have progressively self-educated myself on the benefits of a plant-based diet and have totally shifted my diet which used to be meat-heavy to entirely plant-based. After taking a deep look into nutrition, I realized I also needed to analyze what was going into the beverages I was drinking too. I then began to teach myself about the process of winemaking and was shocked to find out the amount of chemicals and pesticides that can be legally added when making wine. I studied up on benefits of natural wine and started my more formal wine education path through the Wine, Spirit, Education & Trust (WSET) program with the Texas Wine School and just passed my level 3 exam.

My professional background for the last 8 years has been in producing large-scale events, booking concerts and festivals. Once the pandemic hit in 2020, I had to pivot and started my company Wild Wine Saloon with a mission to blend the worlds of events and wine by breaking down the barriers of natural wine and bringing education to people in a fun and approachable format.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been extremely challenging to totally pivot into a new industry at this stage in my career on top of starting a company within a pandemic. In other ways, it’s been a huge blessing to have been given the freedom to explore another passion of mine and the time and motivation to start a company I had been only dreaming of starting for so long.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Wild Wine Saloon?
Wild Wine Saloon is a consulting service that aims to break down the barriers of natural wine to bring education to customers in a fun, approachable format. I’ve found that learning about wine can often be stuffy and intimidating, but wine should be everything but that! Some of the services I provide are private group tastings that can range from an intimate backyard gathering to a corporate virtual tasting as a way to connect with others while simultaneously learning about wine. I also provide a wine consultation service that can help customers plan small to large events.

For example, if you are having a small dinner party, or large wedding and you’re not sure what to serve, you can purchase a consultation service that provides you with a one-on-one meeting with me to go over your budget, taste preferences and the menu of the event. From there, we will hand-select wines together and even deliver to your event so that all you have to do is sit back and have a good time!

What sets Wild Wine Saloon apart from others is the approachability that we offer through our brand and services. My main goal with this company is to make sure that there is an element of fun in every aspect of what we offer, so you will see that shine through our brand via images and how we approach all of our services. By doing so, my hope is that people feel more welcome to learn about wine.

How do you define success?
My goal with Wild Wine Saloon is to have a physical natural wine shop + bar that can serve as a physical location to host educational tastings, events and act as a place to have in-person consultations and daily face-to-face interactions with my customers. The day that I am able to open the doors to a physical shop will feel like I have achieved success.
