Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Lodge.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Design runs in my family so it’s something I’ve always been interested in. My grandmother was an interior designer and I used to love being her “assistant” for the day as a kid. My mom also has an amazing eye for design and she would always let me rearrange furniture around the house. I even remember asking for money to redo my room for multiple birthdays because I always loved changing up the design of my bedroom. Fast forward to college, where I studied Strategic Communications at TCU. After college I worked in advertising for a little over a year before realizing that it wasn’t for me. I decided to go back to school for interior design at the Art Institute of Houston while also working part time for Kara Childress. In 2016, my husband and I moved to Austin where I worked for Mark Ashby Design until 2019 when I started Amanda Lodge Design. I now run the business from Houston where I live with my husband and daughter, Olivia. I am currently working on projects in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and beyond!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting my own business has been one of the hardest challenges I have ever faced. It is a constant balancing act! I (thankfully) now have systems in place that allow me to focus on what I love to do, design interior spaces! Each project has it’s own unique set of challenges but that’s what helps with the creative process – thinking outside of the normal box and pushing me creatively!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am passionate about creating living spaces with functional and efficient use of space, with natural elements, colors, materials and textures. With a neutral base, I like to give spaces an edge with unique lighting, unexpected wallpaper and an attractive piece of art. It’s amazing to see how quickly ALD has grown in the past 2 years and how my eye for design has evolved. I get to work with the most amazing vendors and clients and I get to shop for a living — the best job in the world!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I always prefered music, art, theater and singing over sports. I always knew from an early age that I wanted to do something creative and it wasn’t until my late teens that I honed in on that creative field with interior design. I am so grateful I found interior design because I found my passion!
