Daily Inspiration: Meet Sharde Hawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharde Hawkins.

Hi Sharde, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started dancing in middle school, which was around 2009. However, I didn’t start actually taking it seriously until around 2014, when I got to Soundbox. I was 16 and started on the youth team Lady Rascals, where I graduated and joined the adult team Galing. Since then I have had the pleasure to choreograph, put in competition pieces, and also teach at Soundbox as a sub.

In 2018, I got the offer to become a part of the teacher staff at Soundbox. Ever since then, I fell in love with teaching, and I also fell more in love with dance. It sparked my creativity so much that I formed an all girls team named Sin City, our first competition we ended up placing third. Dance and teaching became such a big part of my life, I fell in love with the class setting and now it is something I want to pursue as a career. I also just finished choreographing my very first music video, which is such a highlight in my career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not even a little bit. I’m not going to say everything was tough, but there were moments where I did not believe in myself and wanted to quit. Not only that, but when I started choreographing, I was being compared a lot and it took a damper on my creativity for a moment. I had to stop and reflect on who I really am and what is it that I wanted to do. I knew I would have others not believe in me, but to not believe in myself? That was the worst part. Luckily, I had people who did believe in me and wanted to see me grow. I had great mentors and friends. I started to see my own light as well. Now I found myself and it shows in my dancing and my choreography.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a dancer, teacher, and choreographer. I am also a small business owner. I love helping others grow and pushing them to be their best selves when dancing. I want to be that person I needed growing up in the dance community. What sets me apart from others is that I am me. There is only one Sharde. No one can duplicate what I do, and vice versa. I learned along the way, its all about the impact you leave on others. So every class I teach, every person I dance next to, everyone I talk to, I try to leave the best impact I can and teach them something new.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I consider myself a very lucky person. I am one of the universe’s favorites, I am very aware of that. That is because I let go of fear when going after what I want. I speak it into existence then take all the necessary risk and let the universe guide me. Most times, I don’t know how something is going to happen but I trust my path so much I know it will, and if it doesn’t then I know that certain something wasn’t for me. I am very accepting of my journey, and embrace every part of it.
