Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Lopez.
Hi Sheila, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Three years ago, I started modeling as a plus-size model in Texas. Born and raised in Brownsville, TX, Selena Quintanilla Perez was a huge influence for me growing up as a young Mexican American girl. From her sense of fashion to her entrepreneurial spirit, she changed the way I envisioned myself in the world. As a proud Tejana, I have a unique sense of style that is evident in my wardrobe. And, I only work with brands that truly envision a woman like me in their clothing.
As a brand ambassador and content creator, I post pictures of my latest looks on social media like Instagram and Facebook. I’ve found that my style speaks to an array of women, especially plus-size women who want a little edge to their looks. I don’t really fit into one category and I think that’s what’s great about fashion. You get to be this other person when you change your look. Some days I am all about the glam and others I am very much about edgier looks. And, I want to offer options for women to envision themselves in different looks and pick versatile pieces.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a struggle to have my own business as a content creator and a freelance plus-size model. Some brands are still hesitant to contract creators and models like me with my body type. It’s still an issue to see a diversity of models in Ads or social media campaigns. Sometimes brands can be guilty of tokenism and don’t consistently contract a diversity of models. This limits the amount of brands I work with. But, I appreciate those brands that do work with models and creators like me. I continue to align myself with brands whose values mirror mine and establish an ongoing relationship.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am plus-size Latina blogger and model located in heart of Texas (Austin). I started my blog La Divina Latina in 2014 where I write about my life from fashion and style, beauty tips, being an entrepreneur, cooking, and my heritage as a proud Mexicana. I have partnered with brands like GoDaddy, Ashley Stewart, Modcloth, La Michoacana, and Physicians Formula. I’ve been featured in Cosmopolitan.com, Hip Latina, and USA Today. My work has allowed me amazing opportunities to work with plus-size clothing brands and Latinx-owned brands. Being involved in these online communities allows me to feel connected with other women like myself, which is the greatest experience.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
As a model and content creator, it’s important to have patience and passion. I am passionate about this work because there are times where I face rejection and keep going. Creating content takes time and creativity and my background in filmmaking has come in handy. I am thoughtful about what will resonate with people and what I believe is aesthetically pleasing. Above all, I strive to be transparent with people who follow me on social media. It’s important for me to be authentic and create a space online that is welcoming and inclusive.
