Hidden Gems: Meet LaToya Jarrett of Jarrett Law Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Jarrett.

Hi LaToya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Prior to going to law school, I was a political organizer in Los Angeles for years and I learned two very important things in that career, 1) lawyers have a lot of influence on politics and policy, and 2) people listen to lawyers! It was from that experience I developed a hunger to become a lawyer. I knew it meant I’d have a voice for life and the influence to change the world around me. Originally, I got into law to be a lobbyist and campaign election lawyer in California. It’s funny how life took me on an unanticipated path that, nonetheless, landed me in a great place.

In the fall of 2007, I started applying to law schools and got into three, one of which was Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University (TMSL). Prior to picking a law school, I visited TMSL, and became enamored with the history of the school and my choice was made during that campus visit. After graduating from TMSL in 2011, I looked for a first-year associate position while sitting for the BAR and for a solid year, could not find a job. I thought finding a job fresh out of law school would be much easier than it was so, I returned to where I started and decided to work pro bono at TMSL’s Earl Carl Institute for Legal and Social Policy. It was working at Earl Carl that peaked my interest in real estate law. I had several clients that were on the verge of losing the family house due to the death of a grand-parent or a parent, and no economic resources to save the property from foreclosure. I was able to help my clients navigate probate issues for their loved ones estates in order to start the process of saving the family house.

After that, I got hired in my first attorney position at a boutique real estate law firm in Midtown. In 2016, I opened Jarrett Law Firm, PLLC and what a journey it’s been. My firm focuses on real estate litigation and personal injury law. Being a voice for my clients and having the influence to change their lives for the better makes coming into work every day so worth it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has certainly been rocky with some smooth pavement here and there. All in all, the rockiness has kept me humble and resilient. The biggest struggle was starting my law practice with about a $3,000 budget. The first and second year of my practice was scary because I had no idea whether I could keep the lights on with the few clients I had. Ultimately, I lost weight in those first two years of practice because I had to cut my diet down to grilled chicken and soup.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My law firm focuses on real estate law and personal injury law. For 9 years I’ve helped clients fight for ownership of their interest in property, prevent foreclosure, resolve disputes over liens, resolve disputes over purchase/sale contracts, and help them get compensated for car accidents.
