Life & Work with Juan Carlos Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Carlos Hernandez.

Juan Carlos, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Everything started as a young child. My family was very passionate about soccer, as a matter of fact soccer was everything on my household.

We breathe soccer & everything around our life was soccer. Definitely, I acquired this infinity love for this sport through them. Back then, my father owned a soccer academic in Caracas, Venezuela. I started to instruct soccer classes to littles kids since I was 13 years old in my father academic. On the other hand, due to the socialist Venezuela’s crisis my family and I decided to move to Uruguay where I have the opportunity to play professionally. There, I had the chance to study to be FIFA Worldwide Trainer/Coach.

Despite the fact, that’s when my career started to make some sense. I was acquiring great knowledge as a coach instead of a player. It’s a whole different dynamic than being a player. I had a great opportunity to coach a female soccer team in Uruguay where we made history. Thanks to that I was getting recognized more as a coach and more opportunities opened up.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been intense, it was many tests, one after another. Good opportunities were presented, but accompanied by great challenges, where there was no time for mistakes and the adaptation had to be immediately.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a soccer coach and I have the FIFA PRO’s license. I work with soccer payers of different ages, abilities & gender. My specialty is to recognize their strength & weakness whereby I assign them different training sections but the main focus is to train them to get their full potential. The biggest difference of how I coach is the players must understand why and how they execute every action they make during a game. A person who understands his actions is more efficient to the ones who just execute every play without thinking the consequences of his action.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love this city (Houston). Since I arrived it’s surprised me immensely, its humble & friendly people are the reasons it makes me feel like home.

Dislikes: This is a very uncomfortable topic to me. All the competitions and the way they develop them, is a bit of a mess-up; a very selected group which is basically a monopoly doesn’t allow the sport to exchange opportunities to the majority of the players here in Houston. In consequence, this affects all Houston’s youngsters who chase a dream to be professional soccer player.
