Hi Kayla, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I first came to the States at the age of 15. I finished high school in North Carolina and then moved to Houston, TX for college and I’ve been here ever since. I started working at my family’s nail salon in Columbus, TX in 2011. After a while, the long commute every day just worn me out so I started looking for another job in Houston. And at that time, COVID hit. People were leaving their business left and right. And then this thought came to me: “Because of what was happening, maybe I would be able to obtain a business for a much lower cost, comparing to normal time”. That’s what made me taking the risk of owning a business during COVID time but that was also saving a company from shutting its door. This nail salon was in the process of shutting down permanently so at the time it did feel like a win-win because we enabled the current employees as well as the previous owners from having to look elsewhere for employment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all, especially with the pandemic. Just like any other business, our business did get impacted by COVID as well.
Our business is still trying to get through it financially, especially when we can’t be qualified for any government assistance. The fact that the business changed ownership during COVID (and not before COVID) prevents us from being qualified for any government assistance.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Galleria Nails II?
We are a small mom and pop nail salon. We’re not trying to compete with the big glitzy nail salons. We focus more on a more personal and professional experience for customers, not just trying to get them in and out. We treat each and every customer, in the same manner, we hope to be treated. We value the quality of our work, and we take our time to ensure of that. We also put customers’ well-being as our priority by strictly following proper safety and sanitization protocol. We offer a wide range of services: manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements, waxing and eyelashes.
