Check Out Jason Archer’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Archer.

Hi Jason, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My career spans a broad spectrum of visual art. I began as an Art Director in advertising before moving into Animation working on independent features such as Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly. This also includes music video work for musicians like David Byrne and Latin American bands Molotov and Juanes. The music video “Frijolero” by Molotov was awarded a Latin Grammy and MTV Video of the Year Award in 2003. In 2010, I began to focus more on visual art and mural production and led me to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For most, art is definitely a long game, myself included. Much of it is what you put into it. 10 years ago it was a struggle for me to accept the changing culture and growth of Austin. It was once easy to live here with little money and enjoy a great quality of life. Once the secret was out, that all changed, but it also brought in more people with incomes to support visual art culture. The advent of social media such as Instagram makes it easy to promote your work and to build an audience, eliminating the need to rely solely on a gallery. And outdoor mural work has a dual function, public art and an advertisement for the artist. Once you utilize these tools, the field changes and it becomes much easier.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I practice a range of mediums from painting, mixed media, printmaking and collage. I am known for my iconic character works Stray of the Dead and Jesus Cornbread. Stray of the Dead fuses Texan and Mexican cultures to create a mythical character with a restless spirit and endless desire for new experience. Jesus Cornbread is a contemporary Christ who is Texan and herds cattle instead of sheep, and drinks tequila instead of wine. He delivers infinite wisdom, sustenance and guidance to his Texas congregation. As a muralist, my business Show Goat Mural Works has led the resurgence of the public art movement in Central Texas, and my experience, professionalism and ethos has pushed my success.
