Hidden Gems: Meet Karen Chenoweth of Birdie’s River Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Chenoweth.

Hi Karen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always valued selecting the perfect gifts for my friends and family, and have been so fortunate to help others do the same. I taught high school English for 10 years, but when I took time off to spend time with my three young kids after my son was born, I quickly found my hours filled with helping friends, family and local businesses find the perfect gifts for holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. I realized that this was my real passion, and I’ve spent the last seven years honing my skills and creating unique gifts for people all over River Oaks. Now, I’m expanding my services so I can better serve my long-standing clients and introduce the magic of gifting to a whole new audience. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our beloved rescue dog, Birdie, who is the namesake of our business and the gift that keeps on giving!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a first time small business owner, the process offers both excitement and challenges. I love the creative freedom that comes with curating and searching for unique gifts and items for my clients. I learn something new everyday and appreciate the grace and understanding that clients and peers give when I make a mistake or have a question. I think the most important characteristic of owning a small business is to stay humble, but know your worth. Of course, I feel disappointment when an opportunity doesn’t work out, and it can be hard not to compare yourself to another person or company. But I’ve learned that everyday I’m moving in the direction I want to, even if some days move slower than others.

Lastly, as a working mother with small children, I continue to strive for a healthy work/family balance. I try my best to be there for my children for all the big and small moments, but I also take comfort in knowing I’m setting an example for them that you can always follow your dreams!

We’ve been impressed with Birdie’s River Oaks, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Birdie’s is a personalized gifting service that helps clients design and curate luxury gift options that result in memorable gift-giving moments. No matter what you select – big or small – our mission is to provide you with treasured gifts that create lasting personal connections.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Connections are everything! And your connections will be stronger if you treat everyone how you would want to be treated. I know this might sound overly simple, but it is a huge part of how I’ve gotten where I am today. You never know how your interactions will affect the future of your business. Whether it’s word of mouth, mutual friends, etc, do your best to make a positive impression on others.

Pricing:
