Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Cooke.
Hi Ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Thank you for having me! I am a Houston based makeup artist and brow expert. I have been in the beauty industry for over 15 years, and just as obsessed with this industry as I was from when I first started! Actually maybe even more! I am married to my best friend, and we have 2 handsome boys! Art has always been a passion of mine, and is what landed me into loving makeup artistry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road! So many distractions and setbacks. When I graduated high school I knew I wanted to do something in the beauty industry, so I went on to taking cosmetology courses at a community college. I completed my hours, graduated and went on to taking my state board exams. I failed my written test 3 times, got discouraged and never went back to test. It was 6 years later where I told myself to go back and test and not let all that hard work go down the drain. I had forgotten everything I learned and had to go back and re teach myself, because so many things had changed. Needless to say, I retook that written and practical test and FINALLY passed it! Even though I didn’t need a license as a makeup artist, it still felt good to have it under my belt and I told myself it was something good to have as a back up later.
After all that hard work maturity hit and I ended up getting married, having kids, buying a house, and then like we all had to do..go through a pandemic. Life was put on a major pause. I started to get down and lost myself. I didn’t know this new person I was turning into and didn’t like her at all!
It wasn’t until a year ago that I saw the light bulb go off, and told myself I had to get back up! I joined a beauty company that I could work from home, and also still be with my kids. Daycare is a whole other beast, especially when it’s times 2! I loved this new way of making money, and also still being able to raise my kids without paying someone else to do it! This is when I became business savvy, and learned so much about being my own boss. I have become addicted to working for myself, and is why I am currently thriving even harder to open up my own place of business. It’s definitely harder proving yourself to the world, and figuring out how your going to become successful at it. But with the right mindset and having faith, I know that is what is going to make this happen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in a variety of makeup services such as, bridal, glam, special occasion, theatrical, and natural makeup. I have added brow services such as brow lamination, brow wax, tweeze, and tint to the plate. Which I have been loving! Brows have always been my thing, and have been called the “Brow Queen”.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes. I definitely have! This all has taught me to always have a back up plan! I didn’t think I was capable of being my own boss! I had always viewed myself as working for someone, and not taking the lead but yet following. Who knew I would I would of ended up needing that Cosmetology license to become in charge! I am in the process of opening up my own private suite, and without that license it all would not be possible! Always have a plan b and if possible a plan c! You just never know what life is going to throw at you. Just do it and do not let doubt stop you! My favorite quote I like to go by and share…. “if your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough”.
