Rising Stars: Meet Scott Brignac

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Brignac.

Hi Scott, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Ever since I was a kid, I had always dreamed of somehow being involved in movies. I had a video store at the front of my street (Houma, La), and I would rob my dad’s change jar to rent movies all the time. I focused on the arts at LSU and got passionate about music, but I knew it wasn’t my calling. I soon discovered by goofing off with my roommates, that I loved the fun of making little movies with a digital camcorder. I was hooked. I’ve never stopped since then. I was fortunate enough to make films for Second Baptist in Houston, and that’s where I learned how to tell stories both in documentary and narrative form. I also did a lot of work for non-profits and in the commercial space where I got to tell stories and continue to grow in my craft. We formed our production company, Watershed Motion Pictures, a few years ago and Playing God was our first feature. We are currently in post=production on our next feature, Chasing Oslo.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Never a smooth road. I think to survive as a filmmaker you must have tenacity and perseverance. There are so many times when it feels like an appropriate time to quit, or at least go a different direction, but I’m delusional just enough to keep fighting the fight. In this business, you get a lot of “passes”, when someone doesn’t want to be in your movie, or buy your movie, or even watch it. That’s hard and never gets easier. But the more you do it, the more you know that you have to keep going. I believe if you truly have something to say through your art, and you work hard enough, eventually, it will find an audience.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a writer/director primarily, but as an independent filmmaker, I also produce, edit, and whatever else has to be done. I love storytelling through film. How the mix of moving images & sound can be transcendent. I’m proud to have made my first feature a few years ago with some very talented people, and to be working on my second. It’s a lot of work, but excited and incredibly rewarding. We have a great team at Watershed Motion Pictures, and I hope that the work we are doing can impact people in profound ways.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
No man is an island. Collaboration and teamwork is key.
