Life & Work with Andrea Patton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Patton.

Hi Andrea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I love to draw and paint nature! I lived in Alaska for a few years and was introduced to the lovely medium of Alcohol Inks. The vibrant colors are amazing!

Currently, I work in alcohol inks, watercolors, and acrylic mediums. I create many commissions for people. I also teach painting classes in my studio in West Houston. I also am very involved in art fairs and I started the “Artists of Houston” Nextdoor group with over 3,500 artists.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We have been raising three sons and when they were young I painted murals in their rooms. Then other people wanted murals. I painted a lot of murals in the ’90s! Since social media has exploded, I have started an Etsy Shop, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook business page. Sales have been better and better.

I also teach painting at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am probably most known for Alcohol Ink painting. I have been teaching AI classes in Texas and Alaska for over 6 years. I have been painting for over 40 years.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Create art that brings joy to my own heart. This is expressed in my paintings and people seem to pick that up. Every painting tells a story. I want my art to be something you feel. The most important lesson I’ve learned is to not give up and keep learning every time you pick up a paintbrush!
