Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Freeman.
Hi Ken, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a firefighter/paramedic for HFD for over 17 years. Over the years, I have seen multiple co-workers die from heart disease and one of the particular deaths hit close to me. After researching, I learned one of the leading causes of heart disease was meat and the way it is now processed. I wasn’t completely sure how to move next but I knew I had to make changes. After discussing with my wife, who also works in the medical field, we decided to go plant-based. She was able to go cold turkey but I still had resistance to be completely honest. My initial thoughts were that I would have to eat grass every day so I’ll pass on the whole vegan thing. After a few good meals, I finally realized that meat doesn’t have a taste until you give it one so if I take a veggie or plant-based patty with the same texture, I will have the same results. At about 17 days in, I started noticing a burst of energy and I was also due for my yearly physical. My blood pressure and labs, like my cholesterol and lipids, were greatly improved. This became a passion where I felt I had to share it with the world, especially my culture. We formulated an amazing team and created Vegan Vibez to show everyone you can still eat healthy, debunk all the myths about taste, and also introduce the culture to the amazing foods and flavors while having fun.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Convincing the Texas culture thats accustom to meat eating, whether it’s on a hot plate of barbecue, a T-Bone steak or just the smell of bacon cooking is almost like telling a rock to jump, lol. I even struggled in the beginning of my journey and noticed how addicted I was to meat as well. The one thing about being in the medical field is it gave me a different perspective on life. Mainly because I get to see the beginning and end of most diseases and life, and that’s what kept me going. Most medical problems can be controlled by diet and knowing that plants are medicine, I knew I was on the right path. Plus, you watch enough documentaries like Game Changers and Forks over Knives that would help the decision.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Vegan Vibez corporation became the fastest-growing Vegan entertainment company and the #1 Vegan Experience via Festivals, Documentary, Pop-ups and much more coming. We built a festival like no other merging everything we love with a vegan twist (Music, Roller Skating, Art, Vegan Food from around the nation and etc.)… We are based out of Houston, TX where we do two annual events. We host both a summer and a winter festival and are now preparing to set a tour for 2022 including cities like Houston, Atlanta and Vegas and are considering two more. We actually are in the stage of being post-production of a documentary called MEATLESS as well educating the public on the health benefits of going vegan accompanied by athletes, entertainers, doctors and first responders. We will continue to share to the world the importance and benefits of eating plant-based.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Veganism is one of the fastest-growing industries and people are waking up to the knowledge. The meat processing procedure in today’s world has changed and it’s getting worse, so I believe you will continue to see an influx of more people being more plant-based. There already is numerous of celebrities and athletes switching, including Houston’s own Beyonce who became an advocate as well.
