Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia Vargas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I made cookies as a hobby, originally. I then slowly got requests for orders, and would have an occasional order here and there. Once the pandemic started, I was working in sales and wasn’t happy. The kind of person I am didn’t fit well with my job. I also felt guilty for having my sales job and my really small business on the side, when there were so many families out there struggling and losing their jobs. I quit my job in July 2020 and decided to put all of my attention to my cookies. Since then, I’ve been happier and my business has been doing well!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Updating pricing took a lot more than I initially thought. There’s a lot of research involved in updating your prices because there are tons of factors. It can also be a bit nerve-wracking because customers may react negatively towards the change. Everything including the social media pages, shopping, delivering, photographing and editing is all done by me. Figuring out, and knowing my worth was definitely one of my challenges.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make, bake, and decorate custom royal icing sugar cookies. I’m very proud of where I’ve come. My creativity has been enhanced by using cookies and icing as my mediums. I have always been interested in art and loved drawing, but my first cookies were not the best. It’s definitely something that you need to practice doing, no matter how good of an artist you are on paper. Although you may think that there’s only one way to decorate cookies, that’s not true. People’s individual styles are translated through their cookie art, and that’s such a cool thing to see
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’m always looking for new ways to use cookies, such as godparent proposals, nameplates for reserved seats at parties, etc. So if you have an idea on how I could incorporate cookies into your next special occasion, I will do my best to bring life to your vision!
