Meet Heaven Taylor-Barksdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heaven Taylor-Barksdale.

Hi Heaven, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I fell in love in love with the beauty of hair at a young age. The more I educated myself, I realized how powerful a woman of color’s hair is. It defines African American women and makes us unique. I knew then that this is the hobby for me. Being able to help women find that fire in themselves is a good feeling. I began braiding at the age of ten. I started practicing on myself until I became comfortable with doing other people’s hair. And, the clients kept coming and coming. As I got older, my work improved gracefully and I was working in a beauty salon by the age of sixteen.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Accomplishing a goal takes commitment and hard work. I had to ask myself what was the best way to accomplish this goal and make a plan. Having a plan is very important but, sometimes it doesn’t go the way you want.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist. I specialize in braids and faux locks. I’m most proud of the improvement of my work over the past few years. I see my work as art and I am an artist. What sets me apart from others is that I do this because I love to and not just for the money.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was learning how to braid. My very first time braiding was very frustrating, but I didn’t give up until I taught myself how to do it. I remember feeling unstoppable when I got the hang of it. I was always told that I’m very talented for my age. I found a hobby that I knew was destined for me.
