Today we’d like to introduce you to Aminat Are.
Hi Aminat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was 15 years old, I fell in love with makeup because of how good the women on TV look. Ever since then, I would wonder what the secret was and my mom told me, IT’S MAKEUP! I was so intrigued that I started using my mom’s makeup to practice on every single female in my life and fast forward to five years later, I decided to expand in the beauty/makeup field and made it a career by working at makeup counters, skincare stores, and as a freelance makeup artist. Now, I am a full-time makeup artist, a wig specialist, and an entrepreneur.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say it has not been an easy journey, it has felt more like a rollercoaster because as we all know it is a competitive industry and everything changes rapidly. One of the main challenges I faced was building clientele in 2019/2020. And of course, Covid-19 led to some setbacks in terms of goals and all but to overcome that, I just kept creating content, making/selling products, offering virtual lessons, and pretty much moving with the industry.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I am a risk-taker! I look at situations and think what is the worst that could happen, and boom I go for it. A major risk I took recently was becoming a full-time makeup artist/entrepreneur in the midst of a global pandemic. I did not know how it would go but I just woke up one day and decided you know what, I am going to put my 100% in my business and see how it goes since I was furloughed at my job out of the blue. It was literally the best decision I have ever made. My business and clientele grew 5x more in literally months.
