Hi Khaina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started Melanin Pop Cosmetics because I wanted women to feel liberated and beautiful and to give them an extra POP in life. I remember being asked how could I wear certain colors because of my complexion or often giving makeup tips to women of color, so I decided to create a brand for that’s inclusive and liberating. Its products are intended to make your Melanin Pop Fiercely! It started in my one bedroom apartment in Memphis, TN and as we enter into our third year, I have so much planned for the business. I’m just a girl from Brooklyn, who loves beauty!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the first few months were great then it wasn’t. I decided to scope out better products and do a relaunch. When the pandemic hit, sales actually picked up. I was doing good then Life hit for me personally and I put my business on the back burner. I had to move states, and all my local clientele went downhill. Money has been an issue, so I’ve worked second jobs to fund different ventures within Melanin Pop. Hoping Year 3 will bring more business because I have so much Ideas! I wanna take care of Women’s beauty needs! Even if you don’t wear makeup!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently work in Education aside from Melanin Pop Cosmetics. I use my business and my love for makeup to help young girls ” Love Themselves MORE”. I am the educator that pushes for students to start that business and follow their dreams but also love every part of them even if society says otherwise. I am most proud of the young women I encounter, who have taught me more about loving myself while my plan is to teach them.
I am also a Makeup Artist. While moving to a new state in the midst of a pandemic, finding clients is hard, I plan to pick up clients again.
