Today we’d like to introduce you to Markisha Henderson.
Hi Markisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved taking pictures, but more so on a non-professional level. I remember asking my parents for a digital camera one Christmas and I used it for a little while and never thought about photography again. It wasn’t until 2017 when I crossed paths with a very prominent makeup artist and creative director that I began to indulge again. I became her assistant and I would go on set with her and the many different types of photoshoots that she would have. I quickly took interest in photography again, but not to the point of wanting to really pursue it because it can be very time-consuming and exciting all at the same time. So one day I went into BestBuy and I was instantly prompted to buy a camera so that’s what I did. I didn’t think about the bills that I had to pay or any of my responsibilities. I just bought myself a Sony A7 II and that’s where M Photography was birthed. I remember taking one photo of my mentor and her sisters while having brunch one day and I posted it on Facebook. It immediately gained traction and people began asking me for photoshoots. I’ve been booked and busy every since!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have honestly been blessed on my journey. I am grateful for my journey because a lot of my clientele has come by way of referrals and people seeing my work on social media platforms. If I had to just choose one struggle, it would have to be me taking my work to the next level because I am very critical about what I could have done better even though the client loves my work. I have my team to critique my work as well and that can get really heated because we all want to see each other do better and excel.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional photographer and I specialize in portrait, lifestyle, and street photography. Even though I can add wedding, sports, and food photography to my list of specializations, I mainly focus on the ones previously mentioned. It was not always this way to point out my specializations, but I quickly came to this specialization because of my most proudest possession. My son, Bryson, has been and will forever remain the best client that I am most happy to capture behind my lens. He is such a joy to capture and work with because he is a willing kid that loves to make people feel proud of what they are doing. Bryson is one of my biggest sources of encouragement. I am most certain that he has those characteristics because of the type of person that I am. My personality and the experience that I give my clients and prospective clients is what set me apart from other photographers. The clients love my work, but it is the way that I make them feel is what sticks and affords me repeat clients. I let my clients know that I am grateful for them giving me the opportunity even if they choose not to book with me at that very moment. M Photography is an experience within itself outside of photography.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I am so Houston! I love everything about our city. I was born and raised in Houston. Houston is home no matter where I may end up living. Houston will always be in my heart!
