Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Nicole Otkins.
Hi Erica Nicole, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started embroidering as a hobby in 2017. Back then, I was only into screen printing and sublimation. I would often get requests for embroidery, so I’d outsource them. The requests came more and more often, so I decided to stop giving away money and learn. In 2020, my event rental business came to a halt because of covid. I started advertising embroidery more and the orders came pouring in. My event industry friends would refer me to their friends, and it kept me really busy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In April of 2021, I contracted covid and double pneumonia and was on a ventilator for 18 days. I spent 45 days in the hospital. It took me a few months to get back into the groove. One day, I made a sweatshirt to get me out of a funk I was experiencing. I posted it to my Facebook and sold 64. I paced myself and hopped back in the game and here I am today!
We’ve been impressed with Nicole Made It, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Established in 2017, Nicole Made It is a black-woman owned business in Cypress, TX. We specialize in polos, hats, patches, and more. We also offer beginner and advanced embroidery education classes. Our customer service and attention to detail sets us apart from others. We are most proud of being able to service small businesses and bring them brand recognition.
Any big plans?
We plan to begin selling licensed college and greek paraphernalia later in the year. We also plan to open a storefront by the 3rd quarter.
