Hidden Gems: Meet Vicky Hsu of Hibachi To You

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vicky Hsu.

Hi Vicky, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from The University of Texas at Dallas in 2017, I started working as an administrative assistant at a tech company. After almost two years at the company, I realized I didn’t like the 9-6 work life. I wanted to find something that I was passionate about instead of just sitting in front of a desk and going through the motion every day waiting for the clock to turn 6. I took some time off to travel and spent more time with my family and when I was ready to get back to the working field, covid hit. It was even more difficult to find a job; offices were closed, people were losing their jobs and companies put a pause on hiring. One day, I got tagged by a friend on Facebook for a job opportunity as an event coordinator. I thought it was interesting and I had experience with event planning from my previous job so I thought I’d take a chance and learn more about the job and this field. That’s how I got started at Hibachi To You, I was working as an event coordinator, setting up events and it was only a part time job.

A few months went by, and the owners asked me to be more involved with the business, including interacting with clients, come up with marketing strategies and social media interactions. I got more and more interested in the field and loved that I was implementing ideas and contributing to growing a small business.

In July of 2021, I bought into the company and became one of the three co-owners at Hibachi To You. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside two intelligent, hardworking, and motivated individuals growing our small business into a multi six figures company that we are now within a year. Being a small business owner has taught me to be more creative and more patient, how to deal with success and failure, and push myself to do bigger and better things. I am constantly learning from my experiences and learning how to take criticism and motivate others to take the positive steps to build my business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a small business has not always been easy. In fact, we went through a lot of ups and downs.

– Building a strong team with three people with different personalities and backgrounds can be challenging. People have different communication styles, different goals, and different things that motivate them. We spent months learning to better communicate with each other, what to do when our ideas clash and how to work together towards the same goal.

– Navigating through this pandemic. Dealing with everyone getting sick around the same time and covering work for each other. Clients canceling or rescheduling due to covid.

– Third party contractors producing inconsistent results.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hibachi To You is an at home hibachi catering/event experience company. We do everything including setting up tables, chairs, decors and bringing the grill for our chefs to cook and do hibachi shows to entertain guests at the comfort of their own home. One of the things we are most proud of is our extravagant decorations and set ups and our five star service. We bring the fine dining experience to the guests at the location of their choice.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Like: I love how diverse Houston is. You have people with all kinds of different cultural backgrounds and Houstonians appreciate and take the time to learn and experience each other’s cultures. You can find all kinds of food in Houston and I love to try everything.

Dislike: Houston is so big, traffic is bad and it takes so long to travel to different cities. Also very against the growing violence in the city.
