Rising Stars: Meet Jamaal Roy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal Roy.

Hi Jamaal, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up with everything I needed, but not everything I wanted. My parents did their best, but when you see everyone around you with things you never imagined having, it does something to you. It wasn’t jealousy, but it forced me to try and find a way to do for myself what others could not. I gravitated to music, and had my share of ups and downs. There were bad business deals and even decisions on my part. At times I over-trusted. At times, I passed up on opportunities because I did not trust enough. I lost friends, money, time. Everything was out of pocket and as the years came and went, my family grew in size. For me, that meant I needed to make something happen soon! I decided to create a lifestyle brand called Yaat Club Endvr (endeavor). With that, I was able to create clothing and accessories of good quality and fair price. The plan now is to expand and have a hand in every industry possible. I want unlimited range to create as I please, make a living, and leave a mark on the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road is never smooth when you do it the right way, take your time. I literally just got out of court after suing a promoter for services not rendered. There were other cases where I should have done this too, but simply felt defeated or did not know enough to pursue legal action. I missed lots of deadlines due to not having the funds to go through with things. I’ve spent more than I made in return most years because things didn’t always land with the people the way I had planned. The majority of the time I went through these struggles because I felt I could do it all alone. It’s impossible!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make music. That was always first for me because it was most fulfilling. I have a number of full length Albums and EPs on digital outlets under the name J Roy Champion. However, as I experienced and watched other people grow into the moguls they are today (from afar of course), I came to realize that wealth and success can not be attained by having a hand in one industry. The music industry is tough. Yaat Club helped to even me out. I still create music, but I also grew to love expression through fashion. I’ve learned so much in the past year, and am very ready to move on to ventures that are equally as universal. I am chasing Ralph Lauren and Lacoste now! That’s my dream for Yaat Club.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk taking is a must, but can be terrifying because you never know who will keep their word, or if your vision will reflect in the final result. I’ve spent my last dollar trying to make something happen. I’ve reached out to people with hopes to collaborate, knowing it may not ever happen. Even when I fell flat I always worked to put myself in a position to take another leap. It’s important to the process.
