Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily McKeon.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a cross country runner and was always made to feel that I needed to be small as a female and weigh under a certain amount. I got roped into the diet culture, always trying to diet and finding ways to eat less to fit the mold. In college, I studied Exercise Science and then went on to become a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Health Coach. Over time, I realized that weighing under a certain amount did not equate to being healthy. I also realized my body was fighting against me to stay as small as I was, and I had to go to extreme measures to maintain that small of a size. When I realized that focusing on strength and gaining muscle would allow me to eat more and feel more confident in my body, I slowly started to care less about the number on the scale. I am 45 lbs heavier than my lowest weight, but I am the most confident I’ve ever been in my life. My mission when creating Em-Powered Life, was to help empower young females to detach from the “less is more” mindset, and detach from the feelings they have around the scale and their body weight. I teach my clients how to fuel their bodies with MORE food, lift heavy, recover their bodies, and shift their mindsets to celebrate their non-scale victories. Helping my young female clients is my true passion. I have walked in their shoes, felt their pain, gone through the yo-yo dieting, been overweight, been underweight, and have struggled like crazy to get to the point I am at now. My goal is to help guide and empower my clients, friends, family, and anyone who comes across my social media platforms, to a growth mindset and to help them detach from the “less is more” mindset. I believe that with the right guidance and role model to look up to, I can help reshape female mindsets, empower them to be loud, take up space, feel confident, and be the best versions of themselves.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have faced many challenges in my own personal journey and in my journey to start my own business. I had mental barriers I had to overcome and self-limiting beliefs about myself and my ability to help others. I started as an in-person trainer and developed a love and passion for helping others. Starting my own business was a struggle because I have no background or education in running a business. After taking some business courses and gaining mentors, I have been able to get the systems in place I need to run my business online, through an app, and take care of everything on the back end. I still have days where I don’t feel like I have it all together, but that is part of having a growth mindset, always wanting to improve and be better than the day before.
We’ve been impressed with Em-Powered Life, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an online health and fitness coach. I am an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and an ACE Certified Health Coach. I do all of my coaching via a customized app, FaceTime, and phone calls. I build my clients’ programs in the app, and the app has videos for all exercises to show the form along with written and spoken form cues. The app syncs with their food tracking apps, fitness watches, and allows them to upload weekly progress photos. We do weekly check-ins to reassess how the program is going for the week and to highlight the wins for the week and any areas they feel stuck in or that may need to change.
I specialized in coaching younger females to help them lose weight, gain muscle and strength, track their food, and also helping them switch from tracking food to mindful/intuitive eating.
I am known for my personal transformation and my client transformations. I have successfully help myself and multiple clients lose fat and gain muscle.
I offer 1-on-1 coaching, 1-time programming, and group discounted rates. I only offer online options, but if my clients are local I am more than happy to meet up with them and show them form tips or go over things they may be struggling with.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
When I was growing up I lacked the confidence I have now. I had many opinions of what I was supposed to be from coaches, teachers, parents, neighbors, friends, etc. This made it hard to really develop into who I wanted to be vs. what everyone else wanted me to be. I always wanted to be great at whatever I did but, I lacked the confidence and knowledge in certain areas. I learned early on I had to push myself in whatever I did to be great at it. My personality was a bit shy growing up, which stemmed from my lack of confidence.
I was very passionate about playing sports growing up. I mostly played soccer and ran cross country. These sports taught team building skills and taught me grit. There is something about running a 5k and you get to the 3 mile marker and have 0.1 miles left to run and you are expected to sprint that last 0.1 miles, because if you don’t, the girl behind you will, and she will win. That taught me that even when you feel worn down by all the effort you’ve given towards your dreams and goals so far, you have to push and give it literally everything you have, because on the other side of that pain is what you’ve been working so hard towards.
