Community Highlights: Meet James D. Martin II of J. Dorthen Martin Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to James D. Martin II.

Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up always hearing from my father “Do the right thing”, and from my mother, “Always say a little prayer”, my life has been molded into one that stands on faith and never ceases to strive for greatness. I would have to say years of mentoring has led me to where I am today. I have an affinity for assisting others in reaching their goals and being a positive presence in their circles of influence.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was a tad challenging in the beginning. The heavy task of me being marketing, accounting, communications, and all other roles that are needed to create a viable business was somewhat daunting. Although, it created opportunities for growth in those areas in which I am grateful!

We’ve been impressed with J. Dorthen Martin Consulting, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Art of Influence…You are not taught it in school, you don’t learn it on a job, it’s something that’s learned through personal experience observation of others or through trial and error. Nothing helps to establish influence faster than CHARISMA. In fact, charisma and influence go hand in hand. I help professionals, organizations and college students establish influence through CHARISMA. Through professional development seminars and private coaching sessions, I cover an array of topics such as personal branding, etiquette (dining, social. workplace and interview), communication skills dressing for achievement and networking skills. In addition, I provide high school and middle school students with career readiness techniques and soft skills training. My Student-Athlete Development Program is designed to assist college and high school athletes to build upon the leadership qualities that they currently possess. One of my popular youth events is The Inauguration of Charisma, A Gentleman’s Dining Experience where I provide a full dining etiquette training session, three course meal and a dapper gift for the attendees. I also created an initiative, The Interview Starter Kit. This endeavor provides graduating male Seniors at HBCUs with new interview gear. Gentlemen across the country partner with me in this program to send items to these students so that they are equipped to make great first impressions with potential employers.

I recently published my first children’s book titled, James The Gentleman and The Day of Good Deeds.

My overall brand is centered around The C.H.A.R.I.S.M.A factor. My acronym for Charisma is; Cultivating Relationships, Humility, Attitude, Respect, Initiative, Self-Development, Manners and Appearance.

One of the definitions of the word charisma is; A divinely conferred power or talent. My goal is to use my God given talents to show others how they can do the same, by adhering to the attributes in the acronym, leading to their incredible success in their desired fields of endeavor.

I help my clients to not only stand out in the crowd…but be the REASON the crowd has gathered!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Always look for opportunities to learn. One of the best ways to do that is finding a mentor. Align yourself with a mentor who displays great passion and work ethic toward their craft. What has worked well for me, is being intentional about the persons I choose to be mentors. I watch how they treat others, how they conduct business and their desire to make a positive difference in their communities.
