Conversations with Malik Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Jones.

Hi Malik, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started photography when my mom bought my first camera in high school, 2012. It remained a hobby until 2016, when I was in college and had friends who needed shots for graduation. My brand started building from there. One shot lead to the next opportunity, until I found myself with organization council shoots, company board shoots, scholarship pageant shoots, and more under my belt. Developing my brand further included self-mastering graphic media design, set design, videography, and retouching over the next couple of years in Nashville, TN. There I breathed life into MalikJMedia and created a home for my art at malikjmedia.com. After moving to Houston in 2021, and finally settling in, I’m making room for my artistic expression to grow, by connecting with new clients through my lens.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Along the way, it’s been an interesting process in finding my community. I love working with new creatives that make the most with a little, and artists that aren’t afraid to feel silly in their work. Building my community in Nashville, then uprooting was difficult, but having the opportunity to grow in Houston, and bond with other fresh minds has been immensely rewarding.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a media creative, specializing in portrait and studio photography. I am at my best in my living room, transforming the space to my imagination. From cloud 9 to Candyland to a lemonade stand, my talent for set design and direction shines through my art. Creative direction is another passion of mine, that takes my photography to the next level. I’m proud to work with artists, and build their confidence through media.

What does success mean to you?
Success is seeing an artist smile after viewing their MalikJMedia.
