Today we’d like to introduce you to Omair Shamim Photography.
Hi Omair, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a June person born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. From an early age of my life, I use to visit the USA every once a year. By profession, I’m a Dentist but I feel photography is been inherited in me by my dad, as one of his favorite hobbies is photography. Upon getting admission to medical college, my older brother gave me my first DSLR camera (Nikon 5100) as a gift. Initially, it was difficult for me to understand the setting of the camera but I learned by watching videos on YouTube how to use it. After a year college organized the Annual Function and gave me my first opportunity to be in a Camera committee to cover my first event. It was hard for me to catch up with the professional cameraman, made some common mistakes, learned a lot of stuff from them to take 4 to 5 pictures with the same angle but different apertures.
In my last year of medical college, the management arranged a Winter Festival, in which we won the competition of collecting most coupons from our stall of Photo Booth.
I use to do photography for fun and never thought to make it my profession, but now all my friends and family are saying to move forward with it to make it my second profession.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think there is a certain level of fear and vulnerability when starting something new, there were feelings of self-doubt that constantly flow through my mind. Am I good enough? What will people think? Is this the right choice for me? How can I stand out as a photographer? Nothing is ever easy. There were many challenges along the way like after seeing the pictures of the annual function of my college, my cousin asked me to cover her engagement event of which I had no experience what kind of postures are used. So I watched a couple of websites and pictures to get ideas, practiced with my cousin many times to get it done right. I’ve found that I learn something from every session that I participated in. A few struggles I’ve faced in the process are learning everything from scratch to make myself comfortable using camera and editing pictures according to the demands of others.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As mentioned earlier that professionally I am a Dentist and also just started working weekends with a big cooperation as an event manager. We organize big Pakistani and Indian wedding events of all kinds. This kind of work is helping me get back to my hobby of photography. Since I’m a self-taught photographer, so I feel very proud when people love my work and ask me to capture the moments for them. I never tried to compete with anyone because I believe everyone has their way of performing tasks with something different in their work. Nowadays social media is the best way of learning everything and makes you do your best in your work.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I have always tried to maintain positivity in my mind and life, and for that reason, I use to go through a lot of positive, motivational and inspirational quotes. And that is why I’ve introduced a new way of posting my captured pictures with some good quotations. One of the most famous pages I follow always is the ‘Power of Positivity.’
