Today we’d like to introduce you to Cris Burl.
Hi Cris, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I never imagined myself as a writer. I was always a mom first, and somewhere along the way, I lost my identity. After the birth of my second child, I was suffering from PPD. (depression) One day, my therapist asked me if I journal at all. I never thought of journaling to help with my morose thoughts. After a couple of months, I started to feel a little happier as I transferred my emotions from my heart to the paper. It was one afternoon, in a moment of weakness, I showed a friend my journal and she told me that I was hilarious, that I needed to publish my work. That is how Musings of a Deranged Mom became birthed. I now have four published books detailing the crazy adventures that I find myself in as a mother. My books aren’t about my children or about parenting. I like to call my books a how not to do in parenting.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My writing has been anything but smooth. Most of the struggles I face is when my depression comes creeping back. When that ugly gremlin sits on my shoulder and tells me that I am not good enough and that I should quit. Sometimes I am able to push that gremlin away but he’s resilient.
Another small bump in my road is my audience. (or lack there of) I am not tech savvy at all and when I have to promote new work, or try to spread the word, I’m an epic failure in that regard. I do have a small following that visit me when I tour, and seeing their faces light up when I have new books for them makes my heart so happy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
After a couple of years writing Musings of a Deranged Mom, I discovered that I have a muse and she can be loud. Those voices in my head would not quit yelling at me, so I expanded my writing genre. I now have two contemporary romance books that are published and a third in edits, ready to be published mid-April. I also started becoming extremely interested in writing horror stories, so I decided to dip a toe into that genre, only to find that it was my most popular book at my last signing and I sold out of my horror book, Abnormal Carnage, within minutes. I decided to not use my usual author pseudonym just in case the idea of writing horror flopped so I decided to publish under the nom de plume, EVILyn Reigns.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have so many to choose from. My dad was an epic storyteller so I suppose my gift of storytelling came from him. He used to tell me tales of his childhood and growing up on the coast in the seventies and I was captivated by his accounts. It probably sounds corny of all the memories I could choose from; new bikes, family vacations, adventures with my friends as we ruled our small town, I chose listening to my dad’s stories. I wish I could share him with the world because everyone would freeze and be enraptured from his tall tales.
