Conversations with Victoria Shelton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Shelton.

Hi Victoria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I opened Kin Hairitage Salon, LLC in 2007. About 5 years later, we decided to transition the salon into a relaxer free, full natural hair salon. We became a staple in our community, helping clients learn and take care of their natural hair.

Graduating cosmetology students came to Kin Hairitage Salon to learn how to care for and style natural hair and Locs because that wasn’t taught in depth in cosmetology school.

Fast forward to 2020, me and my family relocated to Houston, TX. That meant closing down the salon and bringing the KinHairitage brand with us.

I am no longer a salon owner with a staff of stylist. Now I rent a private booth out of a salon. I will say, starting over was easy thanks to social media. I gained my clientele fast because of my skill set and consistency with posting content.

I’m currently working 3 days behind the chair servicing clients and I’m still educating clients and hairstylists in-person and virtual.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There haven’t been any challenges that I wasn’t able to overcome. I believe every obstacle and challenge is a test. How we react to them will determine the outcome.

With that being said, managing employees, working with family, and rebuilding my business has been a huge learning experience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During the shutdown, I learned how essential my industry is. Thanks to technology and the internet during that time I was able to stay connected with our clients. I was able to give guidance on how to take care of their hair at home over zoom meetings. I was able to ship them hair products that they needed to take care of their hair at home. I also learned how to create digital classes so I can reach and teach customers and other hairstylists beyond my location.
