Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Chapa.
Hi Angel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well, I was raised in Galveston County, with not a lot of family so I spent a lot of time being creative in my room. My eyes always gravitated to hair, remember many times hiding playing with my sisters’ dolls and changing their hairstyles. Probably by age 6, growing up in an alcoholic family, I spent a lot of time in my room being creative showing my parents the things I created so they would stop arguing so much..Used my creativity as a buffer without knowing. Growing up in a small town, I felt being creative with how I dressed and do my hair.. to disguise who you really were, look at my clothes and hair not that I’m a little gay kid… not sure how well that went. Me and my good friend John both decided hairdressing would be a good career for us, so we got into college of the mainland Ontology department and the rest of history. 🙂
My life is an open book. I’ve been through so many trials in my life and it only made me stronger and I constantly search for the core of the issues through therapy. I hit my rock bottom about 12 years ago and inclined my way out and now I am a homeowner and a business owner and I’m learning life and work balance…
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all!! I struggled with alcoholism due to my environment. I’m still learning to let go and let God it’s a daily struggle but acknowledging what I can take on and what I should be honest and let go of. In outpatient therapy, I was told I was more of a codependent person than an alcoholic. The more I thought about it everybody in my family was in their addiction and as an adult, I played the hero and try to fix everyone in the downfall was I started caring about myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hairdresser. I started my create Tony and guy in 2001. By 2010, I moved into Houston and went for a really good salon that help me be creative and express myself and learn more tools like coloring, because the first 10 years of my career was cutting only.. Five years ago, I went on my own as a suite renter in the Riveroaks district of Houston.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite memories weirdly is as a family collecting cans on the seawall for a grocery money, my dad didn’t want to put us on food stamps so we made it a game to collect cans and see who got the most we all had our own bag. I know that sounds weird but I remember learning to earn your keep and not depend on handouts.
