Today we’d like to introduce you to Wintress Odom.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my business completely by accident. My degree is in ecology and evolutionary biology, but I always loved to write. In fact, my favorite part of getting my degree was writing the lab reports. I wasn’t so good at the labs themselves!
After I graduated, I put up a website, and I figured I would make a little extra money. Maybe I could pay a light bill. I was bartending at the time and still figuring out what I was going to do after college. I was lucky because my husband had just gotten a job in search engine optimization. So we optimized my website (this was back when you could get anything ranking on Google in a month with minimum effort), and all of a sudden I was so busy that I had to quit my bartending job at Nick’s Place in Houston.
Then, I had to tell one of my clients that I was so busy that I couldn’t get to his project for a month! He went somewhere else. I didn’t like that. So, I started bringing on people to help. The rest is history.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not smooth, but I’ve learned a ton.
Because when I started, I knew literally nothing about business, I have probably made every conceivable mistake imaginable. For tor the first two years of business, I didn’t even know you were supposed to reconcile your bank statements in Quickbooks!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Writers For Hire – what should we know?
The Writers For Hire provides writing, ghostwriting, editing, technical writing, and copywriting services for individuals and businesses.
Our strengths lie in more challenging projects: technical writing, nonfiction books, SME-driven content, C-level autobiographies, corporate website overhauls, family histories, and other complex writing assignments.
Our team model makes us particularly well suited for: large-scale or fast-ramp-up content projects; projects that require a variety of writing skill-sets; or projects that require on-call writing support for frequent real-time deliverables.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband, Sean Odom of SeOpt, Inc., deserves a ton of credit. Without him, I doubt the business would have ever gotten off the ground or been able to maintain its Google rankings.
Kathy Rinchiuso, who, in any given hour, alternately wears the mantles of confidante, fellow brainstormer, technical advisor, and, oh yeah, also manages the office and does all the accounting.
My absolutely amazing writing and project management teams. If they didn’t step up every day to go above and beyond for the company, we wouldn’t be here.
And, of course, our clients — with a special call out to some amazing men and women for whom we have written autobiographies. They have taught me so much about business!
