Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryanal Davis.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story begins 20 years while serving in the Airforce as I was transitioning from The Marine Corps. After sarcastically asking the Airforce to make me a chef they honored my decision in spite of me being qualified for other various positions.
I want to be in culinary and soon after was nominated to work side by side with one of the top Chefs not knowing this was a 2-year mentorship program.
My culinary master asked me to prepare some chicken and ordered me to get all the ingredients I wanted to use. After my selection, I was told to season the chicken.
I must have had atlases 15 different spices on the table and as I started to apply the seasonings on the chicken she slapped my hand so hard and said…. don’t pour that s××+× on the chicken. She instructed me to pour it into a bowl so I did. She slapped my had again and repeated saying…. Don’t pour that s#@# on my chicken.
I was in shock and confused. She then told me to put everything back on the shelf with the exception of salt pepper and garlic. I went to pour the spices on the chicken again and she slapped my hand again and said to pour the spices into the bowl. So I did.
I pour the salt pepper and garlic and she told me to taste it. I was like in shock 😲 .
I mixed the seasonings. Too salty. Then too peppery.
This went on for atlases 45min until I said the magic words… it tastes good. Then my culinary master said. That’s what your food is going to taste like. Now season my chicken and place it into the cooler.
She said not to use all the seasonings created because we’re going to add it to the flour the next day.
The next day I had to eat the flour until I to her it taste good. Repeated the same procedure.
I was in shock after watching everyone eating the food. They got mad because it was so good and we ran out.
I couldn’t believe what just happened. Just from this experience taught me so much whereas today this is the foundation of my business and the quality of the things I produce.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having to provide my own funds and no outside help has been the biggest problem.
