Today we’d like to introduce you to John Glaser.
Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started doing photography for fun playing around with a camera I received from my father-in-law.
In 2016, I decided to try photographing high school football and that quickly turned into me shooting college and pro sports for USA Today Sports Images.
I loved the idea of doing portrait work and with my love of sports and photography, I started taking senior portraits specifically focusing on high school athletes.
When COVID started all of the sports work went away and it forced me to reevaluate what I wanted to do with my portrait photography. I had always had the dream of having a studio and a friend of mine offered me some studio space in his office to give it a try and it took off immediately. Within 3 months, I was looking to move into my own studio space, which is where I am now. My business is thriving and we are doing 300-500 sessions a year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Naturally building anything you want to do has its challenges. I grew very quickly and I had to start hiring staff because I wasn’t able to do it on my own. I not only had to learn how to run the day-to-day of the business but I also had to learn how to create systems for people, train them, and develop them to be the awesome support that they are to the business.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in Black and White family and dog studio portrait photography. We also want to not only take the photos but to prepare our clients for their sessions and also create beautiful wall displays that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
While our specialty is black and white portrait photography we also do color and we are always trying out different genres such as fairy portraits, athlete studio portraits, etc.
With doing studio dog portraits it makes us very unique in our industry. Most dog portrait photographers do their portraits outdoors and with natural light. We are able to create a very different ad artistic with our portraits using a studio setting and studio lighting.
I am most proud of creating portraits that turn into art for people’s walls that they can enjoy for many many years. It gives me so much joy to see the large beautiful prints of portraits we take and the emotion and portrait creates in our clients.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To not make big changes quickly but to make small changes over time in the business. That way if something isn’t working it is easier to figure out what is causing that but when you make big changes it is very difficult to pinpoint what the issues are and how to fix them.
