Today we’d like to introduce you to Howard Covens.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Howard. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After he returned home from serving in WW2, my father graduated from the Pharmacy School at Ole Miss with a minor in Botany. I inherited his love and appreciation for flowers and live foliage, and in 1975 we started installing and maintaining plant landscapes in commercial and residential accounts throughout the greater Houston area.
The company has come a very long way since those days. In addition to being one of the oldest interior plant design companies out there, offering a huge variety of beautiful green and blooming plants, we also specialize in holiday decor. This includes custom decorated Christmas Trees. Wreaths, and Poinsettia varieties for every occasion.
In keeping with the family tradition, my own son Adam has now joined the Covens Interior Plants ranks after returning home from active duty service in the United States Navy. My father took a moral driven approach to business, which he passed down to me. This philosophy is the foundation of our family business, and always will be.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since its birth, our family business has faced many obstacles. Aside from the ever-fluctuating economy and the ups and downs that any service-oriented business will face, we have had to respond to answer to nature’s wrath. This has come in the form of floods and freezes hurting our plant growers in Florida as well as our own clients and employees, all of which are family to us, here in Houston.
Please tell us about Covens Interior Plants.
We do any and everything involving interior plant decorations. There is no office or house too big or too small. We provide all necessary services including design, installation, and maintenance; and we even do short time rental services for specific events and venues.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I immediately think of memories with my father, when we were tending to his garden and I was learning the value of respecting and having a relationship with nature.
