Check Out Eva Vela’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Vela.

Hi Eva, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my parents struggled to keep food on the table. I remember my dad bought groceries every Friday and all he was able to afford was cereal, milk, eggs, tortillas, rice, beans, and the items to make sandwiches. This was supposed to hold us until the following Friday, my 5 siblings and both parents. However, most of it was finished by that same Saturday and the rest of the week all we ate was eggs. I founded Twelve Basketfuls Outreach because now that I’m an adult I want to help those that are living the same or even worse. Along with supporting our community here in Houston, TX, we will be doing mission trips to support small villages/towns in other countries suffering with poverty.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the past, I have done missions trips with the church and other organizations. This year I decided to become a founder of a nonprofit organization so that I can support the needs of the people that I witness needing help. The hardest thing right now is coming up with funds to support this mission.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Besides running Twelve Basketfuls Outreach, Inc, I’m also a Special Education Teacher. It brings me much joy in knowing that I could help others that are sometimes not able to help themselves.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Regarding a career or opening a business and taking risks, I believe that it’s always worth taking risks. You won’t know if you’ll succeed at your dreams if you never try. Even if you fail, as long as you’re breathing and able, there’s no choice but to keep going. We also learn from our mistakes and this helps us grow. I know that we push for students or our kids to go to college and become a doctor or a lawyer, and this is great. However, I know in my earlier years I couldn’t figure out what I liked or wanted to do. I needed to try different things to find my passion and what interested me. After failing at many things, I’ve found my passion, and my passion is charity!
