Meet Brandon Bentley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Bentley.

Hi Brandon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My curiosity of makeup came from my obsession of Hollywood starlets like Marilyn Monroe, Pamela Anderson and Anna Nicole Smith. My own start into the makeup world happened when I was scouted for a job at the first ULTA Beauty store opening in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona.

During high school I was mentored by an amazing local makeup artist who taught me about color theory, balancing a face and different makeup styles of the decades during my Senior Exit Project. After I graduated I knew this industry was where I was meant to be. Ultimately, my fascination grew for the brand M.A.C. Cosmetics, where I eventually gained a position. I continued to learn and develop my craft working with so many incredible artists like whom also worked for the brand throughout the years.

Eventually, I ventured to Los Angeles, CA and continued my journey as an independent artist while still working for M.A.C. Eventually, I switched over to another makeup brand, NARS Cosmetics, a huge turning point professionally, pushing me in ways I really needed to get to the next level and refine my esthetic and professionalism.

As I entered my 30’s, I decided to take an opportunity in Houston, TX with NARS in 2020. I managed the boutique in River Oaks District and networked like crazy to build a clientele in a new city and state. Then COVID happened…

Even in the midst of a pandemic, Houston, TX has been the change I needed in my life. I have been able to push myself out of my comfort zone and showcase all the skills I have gained over these 18 years of being a makeup artist and bring them to my new clientele here. Things have really taken off for me and realistically I owe it to the generosity of so many wonderfully talented hairstylists, models, photographers and other influential industry people I have met so far being here who have believed in me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an artist, it can sometimes be a struggle to keep on a productive path because you constantly need stimulation around you. I have always found myself the happiest and most productive when I’m surrounded with like-minded individuals who are hard working, goal-focused and creative.

When you move to a different place the need to find individuals who can push you through a creative rut, a personal struggle or a worldwide pandemic is imperative. My entourage is slowly building as things open back up from a strange couple of years since I have been here.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hollywood allowed me to be a part of so many incredible opportunities. I was a part of a Moschino fashion show keyed by my favorite makeup artist, Kabuki, doing makeup on Alessandra Ambrosia and Presley Gerber. I was able to do makeup for Todrick Hall and met RuPaul and his incredible makeup artist Mathew. I did makeup for top producers for shows like Mrs. Maisel for the red carpet, and even assisted Lena Koro and Francois Nars. I did beauty shoots for various brands and PR events for NARS Cosmetics & M.A.C. Cosmetics.

The most rewarding moments have been things I have volunteered for making people feel beautiful who have battled cancer treatments, living with HIV or going through a gender transition.

My goal as an artist is always to make people feel beautiful and confident. I always also try to push people out of their comfort zones and try something new and be playful. I have always believed in a philosophy of makeup enhancing someone’s natural beauty and keeping skin looking natural. Everything should be balanced and beautifully articulated.

What are your plans for the future?
Life these days has been enlightening with all the uncertainties in the world reminding me to cherish every opportunity and person in my life. I have been very blessed so far and need to continue to take nothing for granted including all my success’.

As my father always says, “One day at a time.”
