Conversations with Michael Cortez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Cortez.

Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been drawing since I was a kid. I went to the High School for Performing and Visual Arts as a teenager. There, I learned a lot about classic art and enjoyed graffiti art. As a young adult, I’m focusing on graphic novels and mediums that are permanent and physical.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t complain. I’ve been very fortunate that my parents encouraged my art and myself. Of course, there are constantly dealing with rejections, but that comes with trying to be an artist. The most significant challenges are the ones involving straining my eyes, getting sun, and exercising.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Right now, my focus is on illustration and graphic novels. My recent project, A Violent New World, would be the thing I’m most proud of. It is a two hundred eighty-page graphic novel that focuses on people growing up in a rough neighborhood in Houston. While it is a gangster book, it touches on many themes and looks at a broken family trying to do what they think is right. I would say my attention to detail separates me from others. In creating these stories. I spend a great deal of time making sure my fictional worlds are loaded with information that can inform the readers. As well, I would say that there is a roughness to my work that doesn’t seem to leave.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned that I’m very comfortable being alone for long periods, but that could be due to being introverted.
