Meet Heather Carson of Carson Law Firm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Carson.

Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a first-generation college graduate. My father was in the Army and my mother was a homemaker until I started school. Both of them wanted their daughters to go to college. Due to family circumstances, I didn’t start college until I was 22, but completed college, law school, and my PhD within ten years. Prior to going to law school, my career focused on research and healthcare administration which has provided outstanding experience within the healthcare and business communities.

I opened my law firm in 2019 and transitioned to full-time private practice in 2021 after leaving my position at an academic medical center. My resounding goal is to give small business owners the representation that they deserve at a price point that they can afford. My practice gives me the flexibility to help business owners and serve the community through pro bono services and being legal counsel for the Houston Veteran’s Chamber of Commerce. In addition to my private practice, I also run a low-cost mediation non-profit with my best friend which allows legal disputes to be resolved without the cost and delays of litigation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a business owner is basically like putting your entire life on a rollercoaster. I’ve been lucky that I have an extremely supportive partner and I’ve built/found supportive communities but it has not been easy.

The hardest thing has been balancing getting work, doing work, and spending time with my family. I often found myself hustling for work and then rushing to get things done. It took getting a business coach to help me figure out workable goals and steps to complete them. I highly recommend getting a default calendar set up and keeping your promises to yourself.

The biggest challenge was closing my practice for a little over two weeks when my mother died. I desperately needed the time to process my feelings and manage the situation but as a solo practitioner, it was terrifying. I still haven’t gotten back up to the same level of monthly revenue from November 2021 but I’ve narrowed down the types of clients I don’t want to work with and am starting the process of niching down on that.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Carson Law Firm is a business and healthcare law firm based in Houston, Texas offering services throughout Texas and Arizona.

Carson Law Firm provides small businesses and non-profits a strong legal foundation through business formations, contracts, and brand protection. From a business idea to a multi-million dollar company, we’re here to help you build and protect your dreams for generations to come.

I pride myself on the fact that most of my clients tell me that I’m not like other lawyers they’ve dealt with. I build a community around my clients, ensuring that they have the tools and experts they need to succeed.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
A combination of stubbornness and creativity. I believe that it is rare that there is a problem that cannot be solved and often it takes looking at it from a different perspective to find the solution.
