Community Highlights: Meet Bre & OJ of Pretty Sweets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bre & OJ.

Hi Bre & OJ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Bre: My first experience with baking came early in my childhood. I remember working bake sales for my church to help raise money. I would be so excited to get up early to bake and decorate my cupcakes and cookies for the sale. I continued to bake cookies for family & work holiday parties. I would make at least 6 to 7 dozen cookies that would be gone as soon as I placed them on the plate! Years later in my life I was in between being fully independent in my fashion business or continue to work the traditional 9-5. I took a leap of faith my last job assignment was ending after the holidays, so I decided not to return for the next season. I immediately started to think of ways I can make some quick cash to help my leverage my savings while I continued to create designs in my fashion company. I was given the idea to sell my cookies and that was the start of our bakery. We used to market the old fashion way….DOOR to DOOR businesses selling bags of cookies for $5 each. (Which we still sell those cookies bags at local vendor events) We began getting calls for orders from customers that purchased our bags. After that, I knew we had something special, and God created a path for us that I had never thought to create.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is anything ever a smooth road lol, No!! We had so many challenges especially the first year we relocated to a whole new city a few months after we started taking orders. The transition was hard for several reasons, the biggest was the altitude change! I (Bre) create my own recipes and moving from Denver to Houston the chemistry of it all. The other was just the environment changed, Denver is in Colorado and is a liberal state which means they are for the people. Small businesses flourish there were as Houston is in Texas a conservative state in which big business runs the show. We had a tough time but once we got all legally operating in Texas it has been all about growth and getting our treats at as many events as we can! We believe everyone should try out our treats they will make you love desserts again!

We’ve been impressed with Pretty Sweets, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We have learned to keep moving, the pandemic was meant to stop everything. We knew if we stopped it would be hard to start back up again.
