Rising Stars: Meet Stacy Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Houston.

Hi Stacy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in West Point, GA; a small town not far from Atlanta, GA. My brother and I were raised in a single parent home by my mom. Growing up I never felt like I was missing anything but I also knew there was a world much larger than my small world and I knew I wanted to experience and become a part of it. For me, the path to that larger world was college.

If I knew nothing else, I knew I was attending college. 5th grade was where it all started. My sight was set on graduating from high school, and moving to Washington, DC to attend the most prestigious Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and eventually become an attorney.

As you continue to get to know me, you will learn that I am not an attorney nor did I attend my first choice university. However, I still attended one of the most prestigious HBCUs, Tuskegee University and I work for the best Federal agency, NASA.

Marriage and kids were never really part of my plan but I am married to an awesome, intelligent, supportive educator and together we have two handsome boys.

Because I can’t often focus on one thing, my mind often wonders about the endless possibilities life has to offer. I am always thinking of different business ventures and places to go. The pandemic afforded my husband and I the opportunity to really access and determine “what’s next”? Leaving a legacy for our kids is extremely important and because of that we formed WiseStone LLC using the meaning of our kids’ names. The vision behind WiseStone LLC is lifestyle consulting, which includes health and wellness; investments; and education consulting. I am now a licensed Texas realtor. I eventually plan to obtain my license in my home state to broaden my real estate knowledge and portfolio.

I invest my time in my family, church, first career, real estate, personal training, and other social activities. I am a member of Bibleway Fellowship Baptist Church where I serve in the children’s ministry. I am also a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. where I have served in many different roles including Courtesy Committee Chair, Community Service Chair, Financial Secretary, and currently the Parliamentarian and Bylaws Chair.

I have many goals, and that’s okay. I believe if you don’t lean forward and lead life, life will lead you. I still dream of one day becoming the best attorney I can be, I dream of not only living in other states but living abroad. I enjoy traveling, learning about different cultures and meeting people who are not like me.

It may be hard to believe that I’m an introvert, but I am. My personality is written all over my face. I quietly observe before speaking or acting. My steps and actions are methodical and well thought out. I am head strong and always think I have a plan.

Life has taught me many lessons but the one lesson that holds true to this day is- you are not the master planner of your life. God’s plan for us all was created long before we existed. You can either stay on the course or step off but remember God’s plan always prevails.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My upbringing taught me that life is a struggle. Nothing has ever been or will ever be free or given to you. You must work hard for what you want and fight hard for what you believe. Persistence is key. My kids have more resources than I did as a child and it is our job as their parents to reinforce the importance of working hard and never looking for or expecting a handout.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Currently, I am Manager for Strategic Planning and Risk Management. In this role, I lead the Director in the planning and execution of the strategic plan for the organization. I am also responsible for leading and overseeing the risk management process.

Specifically, I leverage my strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills to influence and communicate innovative, and creative ideas as they relate to the core competencies of the organization. Additionally, I serve as the technical manager for contracts. In this role, I manage multiple million dollar contracts of various types, and complexities.

In the years leading up to my current position, I spent most of my career in federal government procurement. This is where I learned all that I know about my professional career. I am most proud of my extensive knowledge of the federal government budget and procurement process as well as my growth professionally, mentally, and as a person.

My strengths include being a strong, effective communicator; having excellent organization, strategic planning, coordination and implementation skills; and exceptional leadership skills and abilities.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Currently, I am reading the Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller. As a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty, I am using this book as a tool to a successful career in real estate.

To help me stay fit, I incorporate a variety of workouts including my Peloton, and the Transform app.

I enjoy listening to any of Brene Brown’s podcasts.

I love the Calm app to wind down and relax.
