Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Nae Brown.
Hi Ja’Nae, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved skincare. I started my first beauty job in 2014 when my supervisor at my previous job moved to work for Clinique and asked me to come with her. Clinique taught me the basis for skincare, It was my first time seeing a 3 step skin care routine and I fell in love. I then went on to work for Lancome. One of my favorite brands to this day! That was the first brand to match me with all makeup without having to mix. Working for them showed me that I loved makeup but my passion was in skincare. They were great because they offered both and with great quality. I noticed that with every makeup client I was preaching to them about their skin. I was showing them how having a smoother canvas makes makeup look better and sometimes you may not even need it. That’s when I knew I needed to go further with skin. I started working for Kiehl’s (the best brand I ever worked for hands down) and I started looking at esthetician schools. It took a couple of years to find the time to go but I ended up going to school in 2020 and getting my license. I started off doing facials in my moms living room. I didn’t have clientele just supportive friends and family. Once I saved enough I was able to rent a space in a salon and do facials and waxing. I started by taking models on the weekends to build up my skillset and then once I felt comfortable I took a leap of faith and left my job! I found a nice lease space and went all in. It’s honestly been nothing but God and blessings the whole way. Now I’m in the process of renovating my suite and doing a Re-Grand Opening for my One year Anniversary.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not smooth lol but so worth it! I started my business during covid and it was rough. I still worked full time and had my business on the side because I couldn’t afford to go all in at first, Once I finally had the clients and money to get started I got pregnant. I was open for a few months and I had to go on bed rest and get ready to birth my daughter. It was hard not working and paying rent for a space that I couldn’t use. I started as a stay at home mom I was breastfeeding and my business was on hold while still paying rent from savings. Thankfully having my daughter was the best push for me. I put her into school once I felt like she was old enough and ready and got to work so that I could give her a mom to be proud of. I look at her everyday and it makes me go harder for my business. Being an entrepreneur everything is up to you and you’re responsible for every expense so it’s hard but it’s always worth it.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always a go getter, I had so much energy growing up I was super bubbly and I loved sports. My mom put me in gymnastics when I was 2 and then little league cheer around 4 or 5. I was in band in 6th grade and I loved it but I knew in high school they had to be outside all day and I was not having it lol. I played almost every sport in middle school Volleyball, Basketball, and Track. I was on the drill team but I switched to cheer for high school . I was a Mademoiselle, student council member, and on the step team. Needless to say, I’ve always been an overachiever and I never liked to be bored. Being a home body just wasn’t an option growing up I lived at school.
